Hatch Wiring for firebird

Hi, I was wondering what the spring-loaded contacts on the hatch were for. Something to do with the third brake light? How is it wired? I don't have a 3rd brake light, but I do have a power pull-down and defroster, so do i need this thing? Currently I don't have one and my defroster doesnt work (could this be why?). I found this piece a while ago in a junkyard and forget how it was connected or if the donor car had a 3rd brake light. Thanks in advance,
John

The spring loaded contacts at the rear of the hatch are for a third brake light and the rear hatch wiper motor - if equipped. The hatch defroster grid gets its power through the hatch struts - there are stake on terminals at each end of the struts. The driver side strut is for +12 volt power, and the passenger side strut is for ground.
