Hey TIM ... wiring up a heated O2

Tim,

I am installed a heated O2 on my 1990 IROC.

I have a heated O2 (Bosch 13077, 3-Wire from a ZR1 application). I bought a weatherpack fuse holder similar to the one on the passenger inner fender that holds the fan fuse. I put 3A fuse in the holder. I need a 12V switched power source so I am going to use the fuel pump switched HOT wire. It is the grey wire (terminal E) at the fuel pump relay. The weatherpack fuse holder is mounted next to the fuel pump relay and everything looks sweet. All of this procedure came from Mike Davis (thanx Mike!). My main question is this ....

I am no wiring genius. What I did was I cut the grey wire in half and stripped about 1" of shielding off on each end. I then twisted these ends together and then twisted the lead from the new weather pack fuse holder to this connection. Everything was twisted together tightly. I then wrapped everything tight with electrical tape. Is that good enough? I didn't want to break out the solder iron. I guess I can always just take a look in Diacom on a WOT run to see if the fuel pump voltage decreases. I just wanted to get your opinion.

Tim

I think it's time to break out the soldering iron .... solder the wires for the least resistance and the strongest connection. Also use heat shrink tubing vs. the electrical tape, if you really want to do it right.

Agreed. From past experience, I'd solder every single joint that you make in an automobile environment - vibration & corrosion affect twisted connections. Also, any type of crimp or splice connector is a definate no-no, in my opinion, from a reliability standpoint. Heat shrink is also, by far, the best way to insulate connections, and if you use flexible split wire loom to cover wires under the hood (like the stock wire loom), use high temperature grade electrical tape (available from electrical supply houses) - it holds up much better under the hood.

On only one occasion did I have to deviate from the "solder" rule - after cutting one of the aluminum wires that run the length of the car to power the tail lights, brake lights, etc. on my '84 - it is now twisted together with a wire nut......

I guess I'll be breaking out the solder iron
