Wiring up a factory hood light, how do I install it? please help.

I bought a Factory hood light today from a friend "the little light that is on the back of the hood & when you open it it lights up the engine bay" And I need help installing it, There is one wire that comes out of the bulbs little housing and I need to know what to hook it up to or what is the best way to make it work.

Also how the hell does it light up when you open the hood??? I have tried to figure it out but I have not found one switch.

Please help.

Just hook it up to power and screw the metal casing to the hood (assuming that your hood isn't fiberglass).

How the hell does it light up? There's a mercury switch inside of the bulb housing, when the hood is up the little drop of mercury rolls down and 'closes' the switch.

Awesome thanks

But When you say "hook it up to power," what is a good source, can I hook it up directly to the battery? If not then where is a good spot or what can I splice into?

I am skematic a retard, I know I have to splice into the red wire that is hot at all times. It says it is a fusable link, now does that mean it is in the fuse box so I can get to it from there??

Is there an easier way to do this like hook it up to the batery and put a 20 watt fuse in between, or is there another wire that is hot at all times that I can use, will I have to put a fuse between the 2?

Yes, hook it straight to the battery.

Under normal circumstances, it's spliced into the thick red wire at the back of the harness that runs down to the battery.

I just went to Auto Zone after staring at 86IROCZ's skematic pic for an hour trying to figure that crap out. I said screw it and bought an in-line fuse holder and a 4 amp fuse, went home wired everything directly to my battery and vuala, it works like a charm.

A little to late my friend LOL I polished my runers the way you told me, they look great!

lol.. what?! I was only 45 minutes after your last post!

Well at least your hood light works. I've always wanted to fit one from a Bronco or some other large truck onto my car. Those have the hood lights with the retractable cord so you can move the light around. Niiiice.

Can anyone tell me where I can get the wire from online? I have a brand spanking new hood light, but the connector on my wire is gone. (the one that runs from the wiring harness to the connector on the hood lamp unit, not the one that's on the end of the hood lamp itself) I've tried the local pick a parts with no luck, most of the hoods are long gone, and the engines have been ripped out.

Could someone post me a picture of the connector end? Maybe I can find one of those somewhere and splice it on....
