cooling fan don't work on it's own, please read inside

when i bought the car in nov the cooling fan doesn't kick on by itself like it should. the previous owner has a wire connected to it somehow with a clip on the end to just clip it on the positive terminal of the battery making it run all the time. how could i go about to make it work right again? could it be the relay is bad? or something else? would you recommend hooking up a switch to it or something? what should i do with his current wire thing with the battery? i don't wanna keep on connecting it, disconnecting it. thank you.

22,

We can probably find the problem, but we'll need to know what year/engine/fuel system you have since there are some differences in the systems.

today, i just turned the key to the on position and the fan came on by itself. the car wasn't even on or hot. does this sound like a bad relay?

Could be the relay, but i'd check the fan sensor first. It's on the pass side head, in between cylinders #6 & 8. Right near the oil dipstick.
Hook the fan back up to it's factory wiring, then take the fan sensor's wire off the sensor and ground it to the engine block. If the relay's good, the fan should turn on.
