Help!! Burning up fan motors

After performing and Injector swap, car seemed to be running good, everything stable including engine temp. Next day took it out on the town and overheated it, bad! fans weren't working. So I put new motors in and tested them. One comes on when the key is turned on and I jumped the relay on the other. They both worked. The next day when I started the engine and let it run to make sure the fans were working correctly, they never came on. And again the troubleshooting shows that the motors are out again. Anyone seen this before??

Also, when I attempted to go through troubleshooting with a scan tool, during the process it said that the engine should be above 85 C to do the testing. However, the gage and the scan tool showed the temp at 235F, above 85 C. (I am assuming that the ECM told the scan tool that the engine was not above 85.

I'm lost

Mike

I suggest just hooking your fans up to a switch. Thats all i got.

I am going to do that if I cannot figure out what the problem is or if is an expensive fix. By the way I also changed the starter when I did the injector job. It starts great!

I talked with an electronics guru that I know and he mentioned a voltage spike that goes through the system when you let off the starter. Has anyone heard about this? He suggested a .1 microfarrot capacitor across the fan connector to dissipate the spike. The thought was that one of these may already exist somewhere but has gone bad. Does this sound familiar? I am not sure I want to sacrifice another motor on a hunch.

Any thoughts?

I think I got it!

I found an orange positive wire near the battery that was making an intermittent connection. I bypassed it with another wire and I was able to make the fans come on (jumped the relay on one and keyed on for the other). I think that once I replace this wire my problems should be gone. I hope!

I knew it had to be something stupid.

Its fixed!! Turns out the the fusible link near the battery went out. I put a new wire in with a 20 amp fuse and it seems to be working. Though I think my fan switch is bad becuase my seconadary fan runs all the time. Also, I am just guessing at the 20 amp fuse, anyone have any idea?

my passengers fan was on all the time also, right when i would turn the key.so me and my dad did some electronic work and found that the fan switch was bad somehow (shorted /grounded it self. So i replaced my fan switch and soldered another connector in and it should work if my temp ever goes up to 23X

You didn't happen to have battery draw problems when you found that the switch was bad, did you? For about the last two years (Car is stored in winter) I have had problems keeping my battery charged. If I don't dive it for two weeks, the battery is dead. I replaced the battery, and that was not it. I read an amp draw of 0.3 amp with the car off. I know this is to high, I just haven't figured out where it is drawing at.

well my car is a daily driver, but some times it would sit for three days straight and starting right up!!

the fan would only run when i turned the key to the o position, so it was not running at all when the key was out!!

all the fan switch does is ground at a certain temp like around 235, what happened to my fan switch was that it was burnt somehow and grounded the relay and the fan would come on with ingition voltage was aplied, it looks like that was burnt for quite a while before i bought the car, i cant believe that the motor did not burn out yet.

anyway it sounds like you have something still running like a light on something when the car is turned off, it could be related to a sound system is some way!!, something it seems in your car is running all the time even when the key is out, i would listen around the car and see if you can hear anything!
