Cooling fan still don't work after changing the relay, i think???
my cooling fan on my 91rs 305 tbi still don't work on it's own. i bought a new relay and i think i plugged it into the right one being there are two that are identical on the fire wall. can someone give me the color of the wires that go to the cooling fan relay for my car? also, if that isn't the problem, what else could it be? the guy i got the car off of has a wire tapped into somewhere so that i have to connect it to the battery everytime i drive in order for the fan to come on. do any of you suggest to use a manual switch in the car? and if so, can i just use that wire he already has somehow? i hope you can help. i don't know what else to do. thank you.

Well it's hard to say what the previous owner did to the wiring, but I'd get in there and trace it all down. I've never heard of having to connect a wire to the battery every time just to get it to work. You say you have to do this, so you do know for sure that the fan actually works? The only other thing I know of in that system is the fan switch itself, located on the pass. side head, between #6 and #8 plugs. They go bad alot, plus they are designed to kick the fan on at about 238*. Most of the people you'll talk to on this board have probably changed their's to another type so that it comes on much sooner. Anyways, trace down your wiring - get someone to help you if you're not too sure about it, and then check your relay itself and/or the fan switch...

i have a '92 and experienced the same problem. the cooling fan relay is the one closest to the driver side fender(on the outside). now, i had the same problem, but the relay on mine was still good because the fan would come on with the A/C. but not by itself. the CTS (coolant temperature sensor right next to the thermostat housing.) had gone south. after changing that, it came on by itself! yippeee!!!
ahem...sorry, got a little carried away...
neway, try that assuming that the fan motor itself is still good. check the fan switch as suggested and remember that the fan isn't supposed to come on till about 238*-240* (sucks) as thunderstick said.

Had the same problem 2 months ago found out it was the relay after replacing the switch. If the fan doesn't come on with the A/C then it's the relay (Driver side closest one to fender), if it does then it could be the switch, either that or the motor in the fan is bad. To test the fan disconnect the harness and hot wire it to the battery directly from the harness the fan blades will spin. When I did it I found it alot easier to perform the test with the fan out of the car.
