headlights acting funky

hello

ok,so when I turn on my headlights, sometimes they both come all the way up, sometimes 1 comes up and the other come up halfway, sometimes they dont come up at all.

whenever they dont come up all the way I can move the lights up and down by hand.

sometimes they come up halfway then go up all the way a couple seconds later.

help me!

sounds like you have either a poor or lose ground or the motors are weak.

do a search for this problem, I saw a post a while back which included a fix for this exact problem. It might even be in a tech. art. by now.

You nead the Hedlight repair kit. It is p/n 444359, $4.95 at http://www.corvettecentral.com/. look up the 84-96 generation, then do a search on "headlights". The kit consists of 3 delrin bushings. The original packing material has gone bad in yours. They also stock new gears and motors, etc. Lon

Firebird, eh? Common problem...probably the driver's side.

Check out http://www.bfranker.badz28.com/headlightfix/

If that doesn't fix it, then someone else did that fix before you. I don't want to buy new motors, either, so I am waiting for the metal gear or someone to sell me a new plastic gear. If anyone knows where to get them let me know......

How about this one... my passenger side headlight on my '89 Firebird is stuck in the up position. When I got a new (used) motor and connected it nothing happened. When I put connected to the side that I knew worked, it moved. What wires do I need cuz I know this is an electrical problem.

bump

On my 89 formula, I replaced one motor because it was missing completely. Then hooked everthin up to the plugs, expecting instant gratification but alas was denied. Nothing happens at all, no whirring of motors spinning w/o gears meshing... nothing. Control module? What? anyone...
Thanks

in the wiring that goes to the light, there is two red wires, those are the power wires for the motors. I'm not sure if the power stays to them when the lights are on but if you could jump those wires with a new wire and see if thats the problem...

i fixed mine

ok i fixed my headlight with out buying a new motor, and here's how, inside the motor the gear that raises and lowers the headlight rides on three bearings when i tore into mine these were all broken out and this made it so the gear wouldn't make contact and therefore wouldn't raise the light, so my father and i put metal bearing from a brigg's pullstart engin in the motor and it works fine, but it does make a slight clicking noise so when i was at the springfeild swap last week end i picked up the actual ones that go in it, they just look like oversized pencil erasers, and it works with out a hitch now, so that might be somthing to look at and if that's it its not an expensive fix, a lot cheaper than buying a motor.

Try this website: Trans Am Temple It is geared more toward the 3rd gen headlights. Gives you a cure for two possible problems, namely the main gea being stripped and the second problem being the ground-up plastic bearings.

I have the same problem with mine. But after pulling the "bad" motor a pluging it in to the "good" side, the bad motor works fine. On the 87-92 birds the headlight motors work on a 2 wire system that does not use relays. The motors are connected directly to a solid state control module on the firewall. Your best bet is to swap this module with a known good one.

I forgot that I'd posted a link to Corvette Central back in late July for the parts. Since then I've tooled up and fabricated the parts as well. The TDS 207280 Headlight Repair Kit is $5. It consists of 3 Delrin bushings. The kit repairs the 1987-92 Firebirds, 1987-88 Fiero & 1988-96 Corvette. I'll have the gaskets in stock in roughly a week as well. E-mail me if you need a kit, (web site is almost done).

Along the same lines, I have a problem with my driverside headlight. Although the light will not pop up, the thing that seems fishy is that the headlight and the parking light will not illuminate at all. The turnsignal (and hazards) will flash but I get nothing from the headlight when I hit the switch in the car. This makes me think it is not merely a headlight motor issue but an electrical (wiring) issue. What should I be checking?
