strange fog light problem

Here goes my VERY (long) confusing story...

When I bought my car one of the fog light bulbs were burnt out. I went months leaving them off until one day I got bored and decided to fix them. I put in a new bulb and they worked fine. Later that night I was driving and out of nowhere most of my dash lights went out. I tried turning off my fog lights and the switch wouldnt "click" ...broke it. I noticed that when you have the high beams off the lights work fine but when you put the beams on my gauges (speedo, tach, etc) and radio clock/station indicator go out. All my other lights work regardless (blinker arrows, high beam indicator, check engine light) ...So, I unplugged the fog light toggle switch and tried rigging up another one (not the same kind ...stupid me) and ended up burning up the wire. Now whenever I turn on my headlights my gauge lights and radio light go out ...How are they connected? Should I just go and remove all the fog light wiring (that looks like REAL fun)? I'm really clueless on this one ...nobody can seem to give me a good answer. ANY ideas would be great.

I'm not an expert here, but I'll try to help you out anyways. I would first disconnect your foglight switch at the switch itself and check to see if your dash lights work then. If they do, then there's probably a short in your foglight wiring and/or a bad relay. I don't really know what you've done to the fog switch, but you may have hosed up the headlight switch. There is a relay for the fog/hi-beamers and that could be bad. Hopefully someone will jump on the wagon here and can help you out, but I'd start by isolating your fogs from the others to see if your switch is bad or not. They're not to hard to replace anyways. What year car you have?

1988 ...

I disconnected the fog lights from the back of them but thats it. When I had the fog light switch connected to the wires it worked when the high beams were off ...but when you disconnect the fog light toggle switch NOTHING works. It like whenever the fog lights are out the dash lights go out ...when the high beams are on the fogs go out. But now with no switch (and some burned up wires) nothing works

There is a relay in there somewhere that basically prevents the fog lites and hi-beams from being on at the same time. I know I'm probably not much help, but try to repair the burnt wires first and disconnect your fog lite switch. That sounds like part of the problem itself...
