Newbie Question

Just picked up a 92 RS v8 5.0l.

It was running very hot so I changed the thermostat. Now it runs lots cooler (around 175). I'm wondering about the cooling fan. Is it supposed to run when the engine is off? or only when its running and reches high temp. I ask because when I shut off the engine the gauge redlines but the fan doesn't come on. Thanks all.

Welcome and No. The fan will shut off when the power is shut off. As soon as you shut the motor off, you no longer have circulation of coolant through the engine. Thats why it will end up red lining. But even then it should'nt readline. You may have a deeper issue than you think. Hope that helps and good luck!

Well, if it's redlining when you shut it down, that's not good. It might be time to change the collant in the system. Also, there is the possiblity that you may have a gauge that is reading incorrectly. Those are just some of my thoughts though, but it still should not redline. Just some things to consider. Good Luck!!

Good advice. I finally broke down and bought a new water pump. Installed it (very fun). Car runs lots cooler, fan turns on around 210. Doesn't redline when off anymore either. Thanks again.
