I JUST DON'T KNOW>

I have a brand new silver die hard battery and have a new altinator in my 87 IROC 5.7 TPI. If I'm driving my battery will flux between 12-10V. But, If I'm at idle or working on my car at all, the battery dies. It seems to have a hard time recharging. Any suggestions how I could remedy this problem. Can I get a bigger Altinator(volt) or is there a short or ground problem?

I had the same sort of problems and it turned out to be the alternator.Pull it and have it tested where you bought it.Hope you saved your reciept, however a quick check of the cables is also a good idea, the positive will wear and or get burned, down in the lower depths around the starter, best seen from the underside. Also check where it makes contact with the suspension. The negative is usually just a matter of cleaning the connections at both ends.Good Luck

hey, not for nothing but my 85z had the same type of problem. Turned out the alt. belt needed replacement. No matter how tight, it was slipping. No squeal or nothing. Replacing solved it
