Why is my Altenator hot when battery is hooked up?
I started my new motor today and while everything went well I noticed when I hooked up my battery the altenator was hot to the touch and the battery cable was also hot to on the battery.Would this happen frm repeated startscause I cranked over the motor many times. The battery also took a dump and my starter was just clicking after a while, think i drained the battery. Thanks for any help

I presume the wire that was hot to the touch you spoke of was the 4 gauge wire from the battery to the starter motor. This is normal if the starter is used for an extende amount of time, such as 10-20 seconds of use.
Since the battery was so drained, the alternator had to work hard to recharge it. The harder the alternator works, the hotter it gets. This is a dangerous condition especially for the CS130 type of alternators that have a known problem of overheating damaging the rectifier/regulator. This is precisly the reason why a dead battery should not be charged by the alternator - unless you let the alternator cool every 15 minutes or so to keep it from overheating.
Many people disregard this warning. The risk they take in doing so is theirs...

Sorry I forgot to say I have the battery in the trunk, and Im running a 2 gauge or bigger.I didnt really run the car for a long amount of time but the altenator was very hot to the touch after i stopped the car for a while.Repeated starting do this?I thought maybe insuffecient ground would be the problem. Thanks fo any tips
