89 IROC Temp Guage

First of all, my car is not overheating. The temperature gauge is stuck way up beyond the right side of vertical. It has always jumped somewhat when starting the car and then it would settle back into the correct range. This time it went over the top. Anybody got any ideas how to get it back down? I know the gauge will work fine once the needle gets back down. Then maybe somehow I can fabricate some kind of a block so it never goes that far again.
Thanks for any ideas.
Steve

I had the same problem with my temp gauge a few weeks ago. Basically, it pegged itself when you turned the car on and got stuck on one of the metal pieces under the gauge faceplates. All you have to do is remove the (I think) 8 Torx screws on the gauge faceplate. Once you remove that, you'll see a few hex-head screws which hold in the plexiglass cover and the metal gauge overlay. Remove the plexiglass and you should be able to move that needle back down. To prevent this from happening, I just took a little piece of foam rubber and stuck it in the corner of the gauge . It'll bounce off of the foam rubber and back into its normal position. When you put the dash back together you won't even see the rubber in there.

Hope this helps.

If it is going that far, I would check the wiring at the sender unit, which is between the #1 and #3 sparkplug. After that, I would try a new gauge, even a new cluster. Dozens are available at all the yards.

Thanks blue86iroc. I was able to use your described procedure and the temp gauge is working fine now.
