Alternator wires

Thought I had a bad alternator so replaced it with a 140 amp. Now volt guage reads about 10-11 volts. Proceed to corner mechanic to have new alt. tested. it is not putting out. So he checks weather pack wires with key on. s- is OK, F is OK, but L produces no light. He says L should have about 1.5 volts and produce a dim light on the test light. He has no wiring diagrams for 88 Camaro or Firebird. The questions is where does the brown wire go? All fuse in main block look good, the three fusable links on the starter appear firm. What could cause the brown wire at the Alt labelled L not to have fire. Ray

I cant off the top of my head help you out with your problem, but if your mechanic can't diagnose a simple electrical problem, without having to have the customer ask online, i would take the car to a different mechanic. Any decent mechanic should be able to fix a charging system problem on one of these cars, even without a book. Any chiltons or haynes from any year camaro should have the information he needs to fix the problem.

Just re-read your post, and I've had fusible links "feel" like they were ok and be blown.

Check the following post. The diagram doesn't display (on my system anyway).

Based on what they said, I'd check to see if the indicated bulb is blown. Apparently, the alt. won't charge without it.

Youare probably correct about mechanic #1 here, because I phoned mechanic #2 who said you have a bad alternator or it is fuses and fusible links. Ihave now taken the 140 amp alt off and replaced with another and it works. Remanufactured alternators can be bad out of the box. after seeing second post w/wiring diagram and other description the L/brown wire reads the power coming off the alternator any reading otherwise must come from bleed back from the battery. Thanks for all of your help, I was in a panic, leaving for Nebraska tommorrow.

according to my 88 camaro service manual L is the wire that goes through F8 in the connector C100, (large connector under left side of the brake booster),it is the - signal to the charge indicator light. The other wire that goes to the light is connected to the guages fuse. Which is +. BUT I THOUGHT THAT ALL CAMAROS HAD A GUAGE.

HMMMMMM.
