wiring power seats

I bought new seats and the drivers side is automatic. My old seats were fully manual. Any advice on how and where to run power to the seat's motor.

Thanks. This looks a lot simpler than I originally thought.

Black wire, umm, where? Orange/black one I can see to the circuit, but what the heck do I do with that pure black one? I might sound like an electrical dumbass (which I am) but just ground it to the chassis since current will only go through when the seat is working? Finally, the circuit is right next to the fuse block right? I really haven't looked

Have you heard that some Firebirds that did not come with power from the factory will still have the wires running under the carpet? I see a thick black wire running toward the seat under the dash. but I am reluctant to pull it out because it could have speaker, or other wires in it. Any ideas on this?

LoL,,,, no kidding Kandied

blkform,,,welcome & yes,, my 86 daytona was wired for power windows, locks & mirrors even though it didn't have them, & my 'bird it is wired for power mirrors which it does not have either. My belief was that it was cheaper to throw in harnesses for optioned cars even if they didn't get the options than to make harness specific cars. That way,, if certain cars got options,, the crap could just be plugged in down the line w/o any special work. just my opinion tho,, I could be wrong.

Joez,,, 'usually' a black wire is merely a ground,, checking the link I posed above would confirm that if geocities is working

well, the pic still isn't working for me; but don't feel bad i didn't have a harness either and i'm still trying to debate how i want to go about safely hooking the seat up. as of now i temporarily hooked it up to set it in position which has done the trick, but i would like it to work.

Re: wiring power seats

I was lucky enough to get a wiring harness with my seats; now if I pull up the carpet and there's no harness already there, do I just feed it through straight across under the console or is there a certain channel it will follow? It's pretty thick and I can see that it will interfere with how the console sits.

Cheers ToM

Re: wiring power seats

On a firebird there is a power distribution block behind the drivers side kick panel. thats where a factory equipped car gets power for the seat from. It is easily added if your car doesn't have it. Your seat harnesses orange wire probably has a rectangular connector that will just plug into this distribution block. ...... If you car doesn't have this find one and the feed wire that goes from the junction block to the back of the fusebox. real simple to hook up. I don't think Camaro's had this though.

Re: wiring power seats

I have yet to find a manual Camaro that did not have the power seats wiring (under the carpet/drivers seat where the x is cut in carpet) so I would imagine the Firebirds are the same. Ceck there first and then all you have to do is plug and play.

I lifted up my carpet today and had a look but found no plugs.

However I also had a peek at the fuse box and I see these same type of plugs going into it. There are no empty spots that I can see, however I wanted to disable my daytime running lights anyway so can I pull that plug and fuse, extend the power cable from my wiring harness, plug in where the DRL were and put a new fuse in there (I think someone mentioned that [power seats neeed a 30a fuse)? And run the wires alongside the door under the carpet? Will that work?

Sorry guys for being so green but I'm learning!!!

Re: wiring power seats

I just ran a wire from the single hole in the fuse box labeled BATT, to the power seat wire orange/black. Then I gounded the solid black wire to the chassis. Seat functions when key off, so you can adjust it BEFORE getting in.

Re: wiring power seats

Hi all

I successfully wired the seats up to the lighter like someone suggested in a similar thread... they work great! *Total Case of Beginner's Luck*

Now should I increase the rating of the fuse the seats are on? Did someone mention in another thread that you should use 30 or 35 amps for power seats?

Cheers Tom

Re: wiring power seats

The power wire for the cig lighter is about 1/3rd the size of the power wire for the power seat.

Better watch out for fires !!

IMO you are better off adding the same gauge wire to the power seat wiring & running it directly to the battery and an in-line fuse. This way if the power seat causes a problem you don't loose all the Acc. Who knows where in the dash harness that baby is going to fry when trying to send enough power thru to move that seat !

well you have met one now!
there is no power seat wiring under my drivers seat and no damn X either.
when i cut an X into the area and found wires that go to the console the colors dont match the ones that fit the 98 f/b harness i have. they were kind enough to give me a pigtail of the harness that clips in to the one under the seat, but that is little help when nothing actually matches and you have 6 wires to plug in. yes i know black is ground, but what about white, brown, purple, grey and orange and how do they match up with the colors that were used back in 90? under the sear thare are blue, yellow, dark blue, pink, there are three different white wires, but no grey, purple, brown or orange. so there is no plug and play anything there. they dont even use the same colors and no one, not even the dealers seem to have a wiring diagram that shows colors and locations, much less a picture of what it is supposed to look like.
