About to start blue LED dash project

I'm about to start my new LED project. It's going to be modifying my 91's dash for LEDs. I plan on buying about 100 high brightness LEDs (about 3000mcd) and use them to light up the numbers on the dash blue. I plan on using two LEDs per number for each digit. Since the needles have a transparent core I plan on putting blue LEDs behind the needle core so the whole needle lights up blue. The blue and red should make for a nice combination and it should match my Sony deck beautifully. I will post pics withing the next few days.

tight
i want to add this tight panasonic head unit...the one that is silver, but glows blue at night....but that'd totally throw the mellow red/orange glow scheme off, so i'll probably end up with a sony too.
lemme see how it looks when ya get it done.

what ohm resister are you planning on putting in the circuit for the led? Or are you planning on making a seperate power supply.

For my last project I'd have to get a video made.

And no I dont plan on using any resistors. I will put 7 LEDs in series with each other or however many it takes to get the manufacturer's mA rating. I changed my deck to an AIWA CDC-MP32 which is also blue and red and plays MP3s to boot!

so you are not going to modify the factory bulb holders. You are just going to run a wire in series to all the LED’s. I want o change the dash on my bro’s 92 to Blue LED's. but how are you planning on mounting then?

Oh hell no! The LEDs wont be even half as bright as the bulbs. I plan on mounting the LEDs right on the back of the gauges with lots of hot glue!

I agree, high intensity LEDs are pretty bright. And as far as how many you hook in series, it's not the current but rather the voltage that determines how many you're going to put together. You're right tho with 7 bulbs, assuming they drop 2 volts each and 14VDC with the engine running. The LED's will actually consume less ampres, depending on how many yer gonna glue on! :P

I took em off the car before I got a chance to make the video. I can show you the LED clusters I built if you want

I'm redoing the whole thing professionally. I'm going be using SCSI cable headers to get the LEDs to stay up straight and get then perfectly aligned and also use 6 LEDs in series then use a voltage regulator to supply the 6 leds a constant voltage. That way I can get rid of the annoying flickering at idle.

actually thatd be great, because i was curious on where you put them cause i would imagine where you place em greatly affects that....

you think its possible to do sequential blinkers?
im new to electronics, im learning as much as possible... but whats your thoughts? my car will never be stock again,

You can do the sequencer part of the lights pretty easy, but dont you think it would look pretty stupid with red, yellow and white lights back there ?

I was about to do the dash but I'm gonna wait till the funds allow me to do so. 60 blue LEDs costs quite a bit these days !

Aaaaaah, well that might look a lil better huh. lol

I have this new idea where I'm gonna be using computer cable IDE style connectors to put the LEDs in, in an effort to keep them all nice and straight so the light pattern is uniform. I think I'm gonna do that pretty soon here. I'll let you know how it goes and I'll take some pics. I think I'll also make a small voltage regulating circuit so it keeps the voltage at a preset level at idle so it doesnt flicker like it used to.

Radio Shack is the place to get anything you need to position your LED's. Try using a piece called a breadboard (it is a circuit bord with patterned holes for placement of electronic components) these can usually be cut to size. I've used them in the past for other projects without any problems. Please post some pics of your finished product. I am very interested in the results.

A breadboard would be a little harder to work with but it might be easier to incorporate the voltage regulator on it and I could do pretty much any design I want. I was thinking of two small circles for each "rectangle" on the light, since on IROC lights the red part is divided in three.
