Why does rpm drop to 0 after 2000rpm?

Why does rpm drop to 0 after 2000rpm?
So I take my msd6al off the coil and put on the old ignition and the rpms seem to rev accordingly and goes past 2000 rpm without dropping to zero. With the msd6al the rpm gauge does not work properly. Turns out I have a bad alternator. Is this the only reason why the msd6al quit working the rpm gauge correctly? Could the msd6al be bad due to low voltage?
