I know I am probably going to sound stupid asking this but...my computer is bad and I was wondering if you can get perfomance computers? I always hear people talking about 'chipping' their cars and I didn't know if they replaced their computers or just did something else? If you can get performance computers any suggestions? I've got an 89 305 TBI with a newly rebuilt motor. Thanks

There are no performance computers for the third gens that I know off..just factory replacements. The only part you can upgrade is the chip in the computer. You should be able to get a new computer at local parts store for around $100,that's what I paid for the replacement one for my '86 TPI T/A when I still owned it.Then do a search on this board about chips, there is alot of info to help you decide what is best for you.

If you replace the ECM try to get a GM remanufactured unit. I have firsthand experience with how they are handled when they are sent to a GM authorized facility and I will tell you there is a difference. Most aftermarket rebuilders simply repair what is wrong and leave it at that. The approved GM facilities not only repair but they do many upgrades based on thier reports of failure. Fact is, that almost half of the units sent in for repair are OK. They are simply misdiagnosed. Most rebuilders just perform a few checks and restore them to service. Even if an ECM passes all tests, a GM authorized facility still replaces all parts deemed high-failure items. As far as aftermarket chips are concerned don't waste your money. They are simply not worth it. Unless you are looking for something specific in your power curve overall driveability is never as good. A lot of guy's will balk at this, but it is simply a fact. I have tried almost everything over the last 20+ years and every time I try to improve what the engineer designed I lost something else. Spend your money on something that will generate a positive return.
