Damned strange

Ok here it is. I have 91 RS 5.0 that has about 82,000miles on it. Any way in July i had a minor electrical fire near the battery. I replace all of the wires and the battery and had no problems until about the beggining of october. then i had intermitant no start situations. But first one thing. I got in one day a few days before and i went to start it and the door locks went spastic (lock/unlock several times) and then nothing. I came back a few minutes later and it started up. Then for a few days following i would sometimes get in (ruffly 2-3 hours since the car had been running) and it would not start. Everything would work and nothing would dim. Also there was no noise from the starter or anything. Then it stopped until today. Now the only thing i can think of interms of weather or any link really to the few times last month is the weather. I turned off pretty cool and very damp in the last few days. Any idea's? Ignition modual what. Thanks.

All of the fuses were good, nothing to be replace and it hasn't happened since then. I have also had it happen when i haven't used the power locks recently. I would like some idea for the mechanic aside from what i can guess (ignition modual, VATS problem, computer hiccup (not real likely) or maybe a starter.) since i will only be home for a few days (thanksgiveing break) the car can't go in for huge amounts of time.

This is just a wild *** guess but here goes. First a question. Was your fire due to an electrical short? If so maybe some wires we're melted together or almost melted together maybe the insulation on some wires melted off and condensation (due to the rain or cold) shorts the system out. That is my WAG. (wild *** guess)

your fuse was blowing because of binding with the lock solenoid or its linkage being dry. take the door panel off and lube everything, and put in the correct fuse or you will be in jokermans plight. Jokerman, if you replaced wires which ones were they? It is still possible to have a bad cable if you used some generic type. Best bet, get a voltmeter and just try to do some checks at the starter. It is hard to help more without additional info.

It was the + main cable, the group of small wires and fuseable links next to the battery and one small ( i mean like 18 guage or a bit smaller) what appeared to be some sort of ground (bolted from - terminal to body). I think there was a few other parts, but i can't remember and since its 17 degrees right now i will get back too it later. I have checked and checked the wires to make sure they were the correct guage, connected firmly and properly several times and anytime i am near the batter i check to make sure they aren't comeing in contact with the body and that they are nice and tight with no bare bits or anything. It hasn't happened since those two times 2 weeks ago or so, I am not real sure what is going on. Its been snowing here and it hasn't given me a problems so i have no idea. A mechanic (who we don't trust anymore, but its still an idea) said that the starter could have a flat spot on it. The only thing about this that bothers me is the huge gap in time inbetween occurances and the fact that it happens a couple days in a row when it happens and if i give it a few minutes it will start right up.
