Compatible alternator?

I am going to be getting another alternator as mine has fried (AutoZone rebuilt unit.) Someone had mentioned earlier that the CS-type from a late-model Olds 98 would work in our cars, and it is 144 amps. Can anyone confirm this? I'm tired of my car eating alts (third one in three years.)

there are companys that remanufacture alt.'s and make them high power for direct replacement. i think you can get one from jcwhitney or summit. don't know bout the olds thing but its likely the same because most GM alts are the same except power ratings.

Well I don't know about on a serp belt setup, but I used a CS-144 alternator from a caddy on my v-belt Camaro. I followed an old Chevy Hi Perf. article that explained how to swap them. You should already have a CS-130 in yours. I am pretty sure they use the same electrical connector. The only thing I think you have to be concerned with I think is the postiion of the mounting bolts. I needed one with 180 degree offset. On most 3rd gen serp setups I think they call for 90 degree offset. Look in a junkyard real close and I bet you could tell if it will fit or not. Remember the B4C Camaros had the CS-144 alternators, so one has to fit.

Yeah, the boneyards around here have lots of CS-144s, but as I understand it you have to get another alt. bracket for it to fit. I am in the spot of having to replace the alt on a tight budget at the time, and I was wondering if any other types would fit with minimal alterations, such as spinning the case or changing the pulley. I managed to get a CS-130 from an Olds Cutlass Supreme, but it does not work (I believe it has something to do with the connector....I looked and discovered that the connector in the Olds was using three contacts in the connector....mine uses two.) Does anyone know which GM vehicles use the same model alt as my '92? I'm told there are lots of differences in the CS-130, depending on the vehicle it is installed in, and the only yard here who has alts for '87+ F-bodies charges nearly as much as a remanufactured one from the parts stores.

Up to 86 GM used the 10Si series, after 86 the CS series. Both will mount the same however there may be wiring changes to be made. Go to www. alternatorparts.com. They show the different wiring configurations for the CS series. They also carry the iceberg rear housing for rebuilding the CS. It keeps the rear bearing cooler which is a major issue with the CS. I have rebuilt alternators for years and they seem to be a good source for parts as they carry Delco as well as aftermarket repair parts and also complete units.
