my fuel gauge meter has gone mental on me, over the full line and stays like that no matter what, is it possibly my sending unit??? or just electrical problem, ground?

Sounds like you've got a defective sending unit or a break in the wiring somewhere between the guage and the sender. Be warned that fuel pumps are cooled by the gas flowing through them, and running a car "out of gas" will damage the pump.
