smoke commin out of the stearing column

Silver is probley right. The wiring comes up through the column and routes around to the t/s switch lever. Be looking in the area of the T/S lever for the fault or maybe the switch it self came apart. The lever on the T/S switch isn't the switch but the switch is at the base of that
it could be a wiper motor, or the resistors that control its speed. when the a/c clutch on my friend's camaro locked up, we got a plume of smoke out the top of the column. and it might be simpler to pull that motor than all the stuff in the steering wheel on a 92. if you do the wheel though, make sure you disable the airbag safety under the dash. it has its own power source separate from the battery.
Thanks so much. I think I just realized what I did. I washed the car on one of the coldest nites and froze the wipers so I guess when I was trying to use them while they were frozen it must have burnted out the motor.
