Alternator hook up
Alternator hook up
I just replaced my alternator but I forgot how to hook up one of the wires.
I know that the large negative gets attached to the bracket and the small red one goes to the bat terminal but where does the small black one that is clipped to the negative but is actually hooked to the positive go?

Typically there are 3 wires you need to work with. There should be a heavy wire with a lug that goes to the rear connection, most cars its a red wire. The plug at the top usually has 2 wires, one heavier guage than the other. The heavier guage wire is usually red also and is controlled by the ignition key, it gets 12 volts when the key is in the ON position. The smaller wire is a sense lead, and that too goes to 12 volts with the key in the ON position. The sense wire ties into the blower motor 12 volt feed to sense voltage drop and thus throttle the alt up for more output. The sense wire can actually be tied to any 12v key on source. TG's use two different series alternators, if your wiring is different let me know and I will research it for you. Most Delco alt get thier operating ground through thier case mounting.
