Need Help! Speedometer problems!

Hello,

I mentioned this problem before, but I have a speedometer problem. I just never ask this question. Ok, sometimes my speedometer is not working and sometimes it does. I mean, when it does not work it either goes off, or fluctuates. I dont know much about these things, but could it be the cable? If so can I replace it, or check it to see if maybe its too loose? Also, where is it, if possible can you give me a picture and show me exactly where it is?

I am referring to under the hood, I figured I would try that instead of tearing the dash off, which I REALLY dont want to do because I will not be able to get it back on heheeh.

Help please!

brian

I don't think the 91's were cable driven. I think they were purely electrical. Pull the guage fuse and see if it operates at all. If not, its electrical. Could be a loose connection somewhere. Also, if you don't want to drive with no guages, look at the transmission and see if you have a cable running from it.

Brian,

I had the same problem with my 86 TA. The problem
turned out to be a loose ground wire.

yeah, trace back to / from the vehicle speed sensor. it's a round thing that plugs into the transmission (if i remember correctly, it's been 6 years since i took it out). on my 87, i think it was a black & green wire on the plug. and not having that sensor in the loop can do some serious harm to performance/mileage since the computer doesn't have an accurate speed measurement.

Hello,

Ok, if it is electrical, and I were to pull the gauge fuse out...which would not be a huge deal cause I mean the important one right now to me is the speedo (I would not go a while not using the guages though.

But, anyway, if it is electrical what would I do? I mean, is there something that would need to be replaced?

well, if it's an electrical problem, the first thing is to check all the wiring/connections before you spend money replacing things. if it's not the wiring or the grounds on the back of the dash cluster's printed circuit board, maybe try a new gauge cluster (even borrow one to test)

Hello,

Would you mind explaining exactly what I would have to do to test? I don't have any skills in this, I dont want to mess anything up.
