350 TPI cranks forever
350 TPI cranks forever
I am not sure what kind of problem i have. At first i thought it was the battery or lines, maybe starter?
When i crank the engine i can hear it trying to turn over, but it won't catch on the first try. Ever. It'll crank, and then if i try again it will crank for awhile and then catch. Then it would even crank. I changed out the battery cables and retimed it and it went back to the old problem, don't know if this was related or just another part that wore out. I thought at first it might be the starter, i had to replace one before on my 88 IROC. This by the way is an 85 Z28, with a crate 350 TPI. Could this be bad injectors? I don't know much about the TPI. Any thoughts would be appreciated cause nothing is worse than sitting in a parking lot while me girlfriend laughs at me spending 5 minutes starting my car.
Ok, I am an idiot, although in my defense it is 3 in the morning here. I just saw the general help board and will now post this there.

Yeah, definitly check for fuel.
The '85 TPI's used a cold start injector to start the car when the engine is cold. It's located on the driver side intake runner. It is plumbed in between the 2nd and 3rd runner tube. Make sure you have one. If you do it may be bad.
The cold start switch could also be bad. It is a sensor located at the front of the intake manifold right near the coolant temp sensor.
The fuse could be bad. Look for a fuse labeled "crank". That fuse provides power to the cold start injector.
Check the fuel pump relay too. Watch your oil pressure. If it starts to want to start when there is pressure or when pressure is building the relay is probably bad. In the event of the fuel pump relay failing the ECM will turn the pump on only if oil pressure is present.
I had the same problem, my girlfriend also laughed at me when I tried to start my car.
Hope this helps,
Matt
