service engine soon

My service engine soon light comes on every time I turn the key to the on position and will go out as soon as I turn the ignition... so far so good, but when I try to read the trouble codes by putting a wire from the 6 to 12 terminal on the ALDL port it just stays on and does not blink at all to give me the trouble code….
The car is running good except for a little power loss above 3500rpms (but that might be because of a problem with the cat) so I don't think the ECM or prom is messed up. What's the problem?
Thanks
Alex

Nice car, but if the SES light goes off when the car starts, then there are no codes to retrieve...

Although i THINK it should blink 1-2 <pause> 1-2 <pause> 3 times or so, anyways..

hmm

Thanks..... are you sure that if the SES goes out after the start of the engine that there is no fault code possible to be there ?

The SES light with the key in 'run' (but engine not running) position is normal.
As far as code retrieval (code 12 is normal as well)....

I thought that was normal ... in every car I've ever driven the SES light is always on until it's started. This is true for my '87 Camaro and my stepfather's brand new Ford F-250. Since the engine isn't *on* the sensors think something's up, unless the ECM just isn't running, I'm not sure how that works.

But like I said, I'm pretty sure that's normal.

its a check position. if the ignition is on, without the engine running, expect to see the SES light, and the choke light (carb)

as long as the SES light goes out when the engine starts yer in the clear. the reason you have no fault codes, is that you have no faults!!!!
