odometer works when it feels like it

my odometer doesnt always work. when it does work it is dead on accurate but sometimes it stops turning all together, sometimes for like 20 miles. then it will work again but stop, etc.. any ideas? could it be electrical or is it probably a mechanical problem with the gears? like i said when it works its dead on accurate. this goes for the tripmeter as well.

Unless you are calculating gas mileage, you should be thankful, think of the retail value of a daily driver that has only 30K on it

It could be the gearing is out of place or broken. The only way top really tell is to open it up and find out. I dont think that the turn-over style are electrical, but I could be wrong.

i looks electrical to me, considering i have an electric speedo i dont see how it wouldnt be. are there any connections i should check that might go bad? i inspected the gears themselves but it looks fine, i dunno what to look for. in the title for the car it says that the odometer has exceeded mechanical limits, so basically means its broken, think it happened in 95 according to carfax so it was fairly early on. im not really worried about the mileage it shows i just want to be able to calculate my gas mileage.

I don't really know , mine does the same thing , but on mine the whole speedo will just stop and start back up when it wants to , I do think it's electrical pproblem, but don't know how to fix it, I wish you luck.

Join the club, I don't think that the Odometer last very long on 3rd gen cars due to the cheap plastic gears.
