85 LG4/L69 , alternator plug wires/voltage question

ok my alternator has a plug going to it with two wires , and then a stud sticking out like they all do...

anyways, when installing something yesterday I broke one wire going to the plug right at the plug.

plug has a red and a black wire going to it , I broke the black one, I managed to remove the black part , crimp new wire into the connector and put the connector back in the plastic , plug it in and all was well, except it's little loose in there.

so my question is , what is the black wire in that plug used for and what voltage should go through it ?

my battery is ~14volts , the red wire has ~14 going through it , but the black one that I had to fix only has ~2v going through it , that seemed kind of strange but I didn't measure it before I broke it so I don't know if it's normal.

thanks in advance for any ideas

Need more info:
What are the conditions when you measure 2 volts? Is the ign. key ON? Is the motor running? Is the wire plugged into the alt.?
