Electric speedometer info

Seems to be a big problem when ppl swap motors or trans and forget about the speedo. lol I've been dealing with it for to long. Seems there are only 4 speedo senders and only 1 of those is sopossed to work with these thirdgen cars. Found a web page that says it must send 2000ppm (pulses per minute) to be acurate. I have seen to different kinds of gears for this though. There is a plastic gear which turns the speedo sender and it reads it and there is also a metal one that is magnetic. I'm just going to try everyone I can find untill I get one that works lol. So far the metal geared magnetic one didnt work. 1-4mph phisically it read 1-120 and then shut th engine off over 120. Ok this must be the wrong one lol. Well I though I would post all my reasearch on this here and some pictures I'm taking incause it may be of use to anyone. This has been a problem for to long and now I'm diging to learn everything about these electric speedos that I can. Feel free to ask any questions on this and I'll help the best I can, or someone else whom might know more might see it. Here is the dirrectory where I'll keep all the pictures of this.

dakota digital makes a buffer box wich makes it possible to run any kind of speed sensor and also to compensate for diff rear gear.

it cost like 75 bucks.

factory 3rd gen is 2000 ppm, 4th gen is like 16000ppm

factory spedo is 4000 ppm

thanks
anthony

your link does not work.

i think it would be 4000 ppm. i used the dakota digital sgi-5 calibration box instructions for all these numbers. momar is using one on his t/a and i helped him set it up.

hope that helped.
here is a link to the page that the sgi-5 is on.

Kinda off topic, but concerning the dakota box.

I want to install a 4th gen dash in my 3.1 Bird. Thing is though, I want to use a cluster from a V8 so that I can have the 160mph speedo. Now, to my knowledge the speedo and everything else will not have any problems, but the tach will not read the correct RPM's. Will this box be able to fix the Tach problem??

i think the 4th gen tach actually uses a 6 cyl signal, or was it 4 cyl. i dont remember for sure. but in any case dakota also makes a tach calibration unit

go here for it

COOL! I fixed my problem! lol Check it out, here is the complication with an 89 Firebirds speedometer sender. They used two different kinds that year, one larger and one smaller, both sending different signals, more or less. The one that my car uses was only in production on the line for 4 freaking months! That makes it EXTREAMLY! hard to find at a junkyard lol. And in everyones books they show that its a magnetic type sensor and not a gear to electric sender. Mine is definally one of the gears but its an inche and 3\4ths in diameter or something like that. Very small sender to of been put on a firebird. All the others are two and a quarter. Unfortunally I lost the old trans and old speedo... well I ordered this rare discontinued part. They had one they shiped into from houston. Just one in that dealership.. which is pretty far from dallas. That was the closest one. I'm starting to think 5-10 more years no one will have that part lol. Well my hell of a problem is finally over. If you have an 89 Firebird be aware of that little speedo sender. I'll try to get the part number for that and post it incase anyone ever needs it. But this one is a bigger sender, just have to get an old sender housing off almost any 700R4 of around the same year with the electric speedo gear.

take it greezy.. or how ever you can get it
