starter elec. problems

starter elec. problems

when i try to start my car the starter syliniod will just click or sometimes it does nothing .. but i can take a jumper wire from the starter wire to the battery and it will start fine ..i have a low voltage problem im guessing but whats causing it ? any ideas or suggestions would be great..

Are you jumping it directly at the connection at the starter?
Sounds like a bad fusible link or bad cable, most likely the link though.

Could also be a bad engine ground. I just had that exact problem today. My 6 guage cable between the neg. terminal and the bracket by the smog pump was all corroded, and the cable that connects the back of the head to the firewall came loose somehow. When I tried to start it, my starter would just click and then smoke would pour out from under the passenger side of the dash. It turns out that since the starter couldn't source a good chassis ground, it was trying to pull all that amperage through the 2 of the small 16awg "system grounds" on the ECM. The car still starts and runs fine after I fixed that stuff, but the check engine light comes on now. I guess that's a project for tomorrow...

Had the same problem. Get your self a new solenoid or a complete new starter I think that will solve your problem.

could anyone tell me what a fusible link looks like or where i could find one in my starter wiring .. so that way when i open the hood i can check everything at once cuse my shocks are out and i hate opening and closing my hood lol
