Erratic Oil Pressure Gauge

For the last month my oil pressure gauge has read what seemed to high - 80 psi on the highway, 40 at idle. Now it reads 30 at highway speed and 0 at idle. Is there a way to test the gauge? Engine is full of oil and doesn't use any. Car is 1992 RS with 305. Thanks.

Most likely you have a bad sender, they tend to read very high and sometimes cause the guage to bounce around. Very rarely is it the actual guage itself.

sending unit most likely. but you can always buy a test gauge and taking a reading with that but would be cheaper just to get another unit and try it.

I'm with them on the sending unit. If you actually had 0 PSI, the computer would shut off the fuel pump, and if it didn't catch it in time the motor would self-destruct. You could also probe the wire behind the guage and see if the voltage reading is consistant. that will tell you right away if it is the gauge or the sending unit.
