I HAVE A 89 RS CAMARO THAT USES VAT KEY. BUT OWNER BEFORE ME TOOK THE STEERING COLUME OUT AND PUT ONE IN THAT DON'T USE VAT KEYS. MY QUESTION IS CAN I TAKE A COMPUTER OUT OF A EARLIER MODEL LIKE 84 AND PUT IT IN MY SO I CAN USE REGUAL KEY INSTEAD OF VAT KEY?

no, you can't use a different computer. TBI was never offered in thirdgens in the pre-VATS era. What's the big deal with using a VATS key anyway?
If you want to get rid of it that badly, do a search on VATS and you should find plenty of removal/bypass info.

Ok dead-woman-walk,
Search back through the electronics forum for about the last three weeks and you will find where myself and several other members of this board have posted responses to other members who have a problem with VATS.

well, we can help you with specific questions..... im assuming you have your VATS key, but when they replaced the column, the column didnt have vats correct?
if so, you can use a multimeter to get the value that your key is, goto a electronics parts store, get some resistors, and jumper your VATS wires with the proper reistance.
that will let the car start no prob.... you could also just replace they key cyl with a VATS one, and run the wires down the column...
after almost getting my car stolen, and having it saved only by VATS, i wouldnt get rid of it

on the key there will be 2 contacts... touch a multimeter set to ohms to the contacts...... thats the resistance of the key's pellet...
then find a resistor (or several resistors together) that match that number...
go under the dash on the drivers side and find where the plug for the vats wires that is suppost to goto the column is...
plug in the correct resistors between the 2 wires..
the car should start when you turn the key now.

How was the original owner driving the car? For all this trouble, I hope you got the car for an extremely low price!!!!

Ya..i would say to take it to someone who knows how to do this stuff. Maybe a friend or friends father. Im not sure what vats is. Is it the anti-theft mechanism built in newer 3rd gen f-bodies? It sounds like it. Anyway good luck. I hope everything works out for you!
