Need help with headlights that flash by themselves.

Ok, first off, I have an 87 Gta. I changed my headlight switch on it because only the passenger side would pop up. So i put a new one in and now they both come up at the same time. But after about 4min the lights go out, turn on, go out, turn on..... (It's almost like a real slow strobing.) The headlight doors stay up but it's the lightbulbs that turn off. Any advice is welcome.

When you changed the headlight switch, did you use a new one.... or used? If the headlight on the passenger side was refusing to pop-up, do you know at least if the light actually went on (but faced down because of the stuck door)?

If the light went on, but the door stayed closed, you should have just replaced the motor next to the headlight itself. Did the lights flutter like this before you installed the other switch? If not, it might be the switch (internally).

Yes the switch was used(ebay.) And i have replaced both motors on the headlight. With the old switch, the lights came on but the door didn't open. This fluttering of the light is a new problem caused by the switch i assume. So i'll try replaceing it again unless you have another idea. Thanks

If you installed two new headlight motors, while you installed the new switch.... try putting the old/original switch back on (if you still have it), and see if the problem went away.

If you got rid of the old one, then before you get into the harness behind the switch.... try buying another replacement switch to make sure that it isn't the switch from eBay.....

If the lights didn't flutter with the old switch, and it was only the door of the passenger headlight.... then I'll bet money that it wasn't the switch at all. Just a bad passenger side motor.

Put the old switch back on, and see what happens.....

Sounds like it could also be a bad/loose ground for the headlights. Do your parking and side marker lights work like they should?

The flickering is caused by the overloading of the circuit breaker in the headlight switch itself. It's a common problem if the headlights have been upgraded to a higher wattage, or if the switch is aged. The best way to cure this problem is to install relays to handle the current for the headlights to reduce the load on the switch itself.

My driving and fog lights are fine, they don't flicker, its just the headlights. I'm going to check the junkyards tomorrow and see if i can find another switch. I bet that's the problem, since this fluttering occured once i swaped out the switches. Oh and i can't really test the old switch to see if it works. When i pulled it out, one of the metal tabs broke off. So i'm stuck with just using my fog lights. Luckly they are new foglights and they are very bright. I'm surprised that nobody has flashed my yet for driving with just the fog lights on.

Good news. I just put another switch in and the headlights work again. :lala: I'm glad to have them back, now i don't have to worry about getting pulled over for just using my fog lights. Thanks for all the help.
