Trunk Release Problem?????
I have a 1991 Z-28 Convertible and the battery keeps dying. I believe its in the trunk release motor possibly draining the battery. It also sometimes prevents me from popping the Toneau cover to fold up the top. I rigged it to work but the battery is still draining. How can I check to see if this is the problem and if so, where can I find a new or used motor assembly. PLease help, it's DRIVING ME CRAZY!!!!

what is your reasoning for thinking that the trunk release motor is to blame for killin your battery... does it just keep on going and goin and goin like the energizer bunny?
first check and see if you actually have an amperage drain while the car is off and sitting. Could just be a bad cell in the battery, or it's just bad. To do that, disconnect the positive lead on the battery, and then take your multimeter clicked to the DC Amps setting and place one lead on the battery, and the other on the cable. Make sure the doors are closed, and the underhood light is off. If you are showing a draw, pull the hatch release fuse and do the same thing. If you don't have any more draw, that's your problem. If not, keep pulling fuses until you isolate the circuit. Once you have found the circuit, check all the components on that circuit individually until you find the problem.

if im not mistaken, theres a switch that the latch hits when its down.... if the latch doesnt hit that switch, it wont let you open the cover, and the motor will keep going..
athough i could be wrong, ive only messed with it once before...

What MrDude_1 said.
Check the local "Pull-A-Parts".....and it may not be the switch, it may be the relay.(its' back there with the latch....at least it is on my '89 Firebird ).

the motor for the hatch release is easy to unplug if you think thats your problem,
No one ever thinks about this!!
The Diodes in the alternator could be bad, causing the alternator to drain the battery, The local autozone could test that for you.

Thanks fellas. I think its the trunk release only because once when it was disconnected the battery was good(I thinK) I did replkace the battery and the same thing happened. I rigged the switch so I could open the toneau cover. That problem I did fix but the draining is still there. I will disconnect the battery and try the fuse thing. Thanks for that advice.
