Set timing procedures

I have an 87 firbird formula with an 88 tpi 350 in it. i just put an msd distributor in and i wannt make sure i set the timing at least to factory specs if not tuned a bit. the problem is my servce manual is crap and i think was made in 85. cause there is only marginal supplemental info on my car. so i don't know if im supposed to disconect somthing or if i have some type of advance. it is a late model GM distributor with a dual connector coil. also for some reason the timing light refuses to fire, i went out and bought an inductive one, and that doesn't work either, or on my parents car, i hooked up the leads and attached the inductive lead, no light. can anyone help me with either of these problems? Especially the check timing procedure.

thanks, but i don't have a tan wire. everything says tan wire and 6 degrees. or check emission conrtol label. one thred has a 305 label. but i need to know what to dissconect on my dual connector coil distributor. or any other procedures. there are quite a few other similar threads. but i havn't found anything specific to my needs. 87 and later type distributor with dual connector coil. 350 tpi. not much info when i don't have a tan wire
