Gauge fuse blown 20x
Hey guys, i have an '82 T/A (obviously) and i keep having a problem with the gauge fuse blowing. I've checked out the cluster and double checked all the wiring but no-find. Anybody know of anything common about this year of Firebird, like odd wire pinches or just faulty wiring?
_also_ if it matters, the computer isn't hooked up to anything that i know of (except the check engine light
) is there a common point between the gauge circuit and the ECM circuit?
either way this is driving me nuts. at least i have a cable speedo
Thanks for any info,
Dave

well i own a 87 camaro, and went thru the same problem, i would put in the fuse and turn the ignition and it would blow, i solved it by, beleive it or not, i toook air duster, for computer keyboards and stuff like that to it, because it was really dusty, and it worked, havent had a problem with it since,

try taking the dash out, and cleaning everything...
then look at the traces on the back and see if any of them pulled up and are touching anything else......
id also look at the gauges and see if anything on the board under the gauge face looks bad, but its kinda hard to see in there...
if its nothing obvious:
with the gauge cluster out, start using a meter on the pins and finding whats shorted.... kind of a time consuming PITA.. esp since you'll have to lookup what is suppost to go where in a book, but you'll eventually find it this way....
good luck and i hope its something easy and simple you see right away.

cool, thanks. the car isn't going anywhere for a while so i have plenty of time to yank out the cluster and probe it. hehe.
The 2 previous owners didn't change anything on the car except they put in a CD player. everything else was stock when i got it. It seems that the problem started around when i got the alarm installed. so i might have to check that out too......

i don't have an EGR anymore
but i'll check the wire that used to run to that. I just pretty much hacked off the harness that went to the engine compartment, the only things left are the basic sensors and the blower motor which i'll be hacking out soon and replacing with a custom built fan unit. I'm using a 12V 119CFM 1A fan that i got for my computer and am going to make a mount for it in the blower motor hole. that should do the trick, and get rid of that bigass air box
