Car won't turn over?
Car won't turn over?
I have a 91 5spd RS, when i turn the key every thing has power, the security light comes on for 2 seconds them shuts off. I hear the starter enable relay clicking but there is no power to the starter, but doesnt turn over. I replaced the starter when i replaced the clutch so its not the starter. I have no idea what it is, please help....sometimes it will turn over for second and then stop or start normally but that is rare. I hooked up a push button to start my car, that has been working fine but sometimes it will just keep turning over and wont start, so i found out that the fuel pump doesnt get power sometimes too?????? I dont know if its the VATS, a bad connection, or what...
Please help...Thanks

Get a battery charger and fully charge the battery. If it is real old I would considder getting a new battery(Get a diehard Gold or something like that). If the car still turns over with no ignition, then you most likely are getting no spark. So see if you are getting spark with a spark tester that you put on the distributor.
Also do you have an electrical fuel pump or a mechanical? If it mechanical you have nothing to worry about, because it works off of engine vacume
1. Spark
2. Good Gas
3. Compression

Hi There. When i first got my camaro last summer the starter constantly clicked and It would have lots of trouble starting. I had it looked at about 4 months ago and my mechanic replaced my IGNITION SWITCH (about 240 bucks) . I have had absolutely no clicking problems since then. You might want to check your ignition switch. Good Luck.

Some of our cars have mechanical pumps and some have electrical. If it a mechanical pump, just take out the fuel line to the quadrajet and then try to start the car. Let the fuel pump into a bucket. That will tell if your mechanical pump is not working. However, I am not sure about electric pumps.
If you are new to cars, like I was when I got mine, try to find a mechanic to look at it for an hour. A family member or a friend, just anything. They can troubleshoot much better than we can when we first start out. If you don't, then changing things can get real expensive real quick for a car that doesn't move yet.
