1991 RS Speedometer woes
Hi all,
I've got a 1991 RS that I bought new and am having problems with the speedometer. It used to work a while and then quit and gradually got worse over the years and now won't work at all. When it was working, the cruise control would also work and when it wasn't, the cruise wouldn't. I pulled the instrument cluster out and was going to replace the speedometer cable only to find there wasn't one. Does anyone know what would cause this problem on the '91's?
Also, does anyone know of a good source for the screw in bulbs that fit in the cluster?
Many thanks in advance,
Tim

Theres a sensor that sends out a signal from the tailshaft of the trans. It goes to a buffer box behind the dash that sends the signal to the speedo and odometer. Does your odometer work? If it does you can rule out the sensor and related wiring.

Where did you order the VSS? Is it very hard to get at to change out? Anyone have a pic showing the VSS or location of it?
Thanks to all for the info.

autozone sells the vss.. you can either match your rpo code.. or go in and tell them what you ahve and hope there computer is right.. there are like 3 diff senders for our cars.. ranging from 30 to 65 bucks. as for install... easy.. just take the bolt out of the lock plate that holds it in the tailshaft and use a screwdrive and carefully pry it out.. you will have fluid come out so you migth want something to catch it then put your new one back in and tighten bolt back up.. hook up wires and then of course make sure you have enough fluid in the tranny after you start up again.

I have the same problem. The speedometer/odometer won't work for a while then jump up and start work and my tachometer is about 1500-2000 RPM too high.
