Gauge problem please help

My 1986 firebird T/A is having gauge problems all my gauges work but when I turn on my lights the gauges dont light up. So Im driving freestyle at night its not just the gauges that dont get power its also the lights for the airconditioner controls... What could be the problem?

Have you checked the adjustment on the dimmer switch and the "TAIL" fuse and the "INST LPS" fuse for serviceability.

The thing is the lights work about once a month... And then dont work the next time i turn my lights on... So im guessing its not a fuse. And i dont think its a short perhaps there is a stickin relay of some sort>?>?

There is no relay in that circuit, just the fuses, the light switch, the dimmer **** switch, and the lights in the dash.

There's a second dimmer to the right of the steering column, tucked way inside the dash, that additionally operates the interior lights on a Firebird, at least. Its a bugger to find and you have to drop the column to see it. I believe it has a dark green and a black wire running to it. If it is defective or the wires melted or something (it doesn't have a heatsink for nothing!) none of the interior lights will work when you turn the headlights/parking lights on.

(I know this because I left the bugger unplugged when I reinstalled my dash and had no interior lighting until I plugged it back in)

Look for the item in the picture in this post:

It's the second thread from the bottom.
