What relay is this????

I installed some different driving lights on my 89 GTA. They were fine for a few days but soon after one side quit. After inspecting the light I realized that my wiring from the original light to the weatherpack was corroded badly and had shorted out. I ran all new wire and a new weatherpack from the harness to the light. I turned th lights on and immediatley there was smoke from a relay. I aasumed it was the one for the driving lights. When I called GM and gave them the number off the relay they said it was listed as an obsolete moulding . They also could not tell me what relay I had melted down. The relay in question is in front of the driver in the engine bay. It sits inbetween the MAF and MAF burnoff relays. Does anyone know the part number for this relay and what system it belongs to???

I should add that the driving lights were the blazer ones that were fairly close to factory. Do they draw too much current for the single relay if infact this is my driving light realy???

The relay between the two MAF relays is the fuel pump relay. Have you tried to start the car since this happened?

The fog light relay is close by too. It sits forward of that cluster, but closer to the fender at the back of the wheel well(not on the firewall). Could that be the one you fried instead--hopefully?

Although, I think the fan relay got moved at some point later than my '87 from near the radiator to that area by the MAFs also. So it could be that one. Do the fans work?

LOL, with all those guesses, I hope one of them's right!!!

Nope its not the fuel pump relay. That one is the farthest right. There are 4 relays just to the left of the brake booster. They are from right to left....
1) fuel pump relay
2)maf relay
3) unknown fried relay
4) maf burnoff relay

For the record my fan relay is on the passenger front on my inner fender skin just above my charcoal canister. I still say that the relay I fried is the driving lights but like I stated in my oroginal post, the dealership has no part number or listing for that relay.

I'd say you're correct. It's probably the fog light relay you fried.

I did a quick search on the Delco website for your car, and they showed that relay as AC Delco part number 15-2371. Unfortunately, it didn't show the typical GM 8-digit part number. But anyone, even a dealer, should be able to cross-reference that Delco number. And actually, the dealers sometimes can only find some electrical parts through the Delco number because they don't exist anymore as a GM part.

Does your relay have that number on it anywhere? Sometimes you might even find both numbers on it--Delco's and GM's.

Yep as I said when I gave them the GM number they told me it was for a discontinued moulding. Thanks for the Delco number and info. I will give the dealership a call in the morning. Any insight as to why I cooked the relay???? Do you know if the Blazer lights draw substantially more current than the stock GM ones???

Not a clue, lol. But bulbs and their intensities have changed a lot in the last 15 years. I don't know if the Blazer is much newer or newer at all, but if it's newer, its bulbs probably need a lot more power.

Similarly, to convert our thirdgen headlights to some of the newer intense bulbs, it takes a conversion kit to handle the power.

That would be my only guess. But who knows?
