Electrical problems... power window problem. HELP!

89 GTA, just got it. I was driving today, got a call on my cell, so I put the windows up so I could hear my phone. After the call, I went to put the windows down again, and they wouldn't move. I figured maybe I blew a fuse. Went to put on the vent so I could have some air in the car, and the vent and front defrost isn't working either. They were working when the windows were working.

What the heck do I do? I opened up the fuse panel, all the fuses on the panel were fine. I found one wire behind the fuse panel that had a connector on the end with a fuse, which was blown. I replaced that fuse, but neither the power windows or the vent work even after replacing that fuse. What the heck????

Rear marker lights also aren't working, but they weren't working before this problem. Can anyone help me please??? I would really appreciate any suggestions.

Your power windows get power from one of the 35 AMP metal looking fuses in the fuse block. Was the wire with the blown fuse a red/white wire? If so, that is the fuse for the rear hatch release/pull down assembly. The vents operate off the HTR-A/C fuse which is a 25 AMP fuse. Check the wiring above the fuse panel for any broken or loose wires or connections.

The blown fuse I beleive was 2 red wires if I remember correctly... my dad checked the 2 metal fuses with a meter and they seemed to be fine. I pulled out every fuse, and every one was ok. My dad tried to take a look under the dash and he said it looked like one of the wires had some tape on it... possibly a wire that was damaged and then repaired... hopefully thats all it is... I just don't get why the windows and vent would go at the same time.

Thanks for the advice Tickster. I'll take a look at it when I get the car back (its at the shop till tomorrow - getting it checked to see what all it needs for safety) and get back to you.

Well I had my car in the shop on Friday to get it checked out to see what it needs for a safety check (it needs a couple things, so it will be a couple more weeks til I get her on the road) but anyways... the guy at the shop said he'd seen this problem before - said it was a loose connection in the ignition. He put the key in the ignition, wiggled it around a bit, and guess what? The windows and vent worked again.... weird eh?

Ok... so I've been busy, and its taken me a while to fix some other stuff on my GTA the last month or 2... I'm just about ready to start working on the problem I posted in this thread....

Mechanic said its a bad ignition switch causing a short and taking out the windows and fan. Any tips on replacing an ignition switch in an 89 GTA?

I have that problem also.... but its only the drivers side window that wont go up. and i resentley replaced my igition switch..... but would only one window not go up?

By the way its an easy instalation if its like the camaro.. just drop the strering collum and you will see a rod going into some werid looking think w/ wires and conneters and there is the dimmer switch you just basically take it off w/ bolts and put it back together the way you took it off the igintion switch should come w/ directions. kinda a 2.5 star rating on hardness

Replacing the switch wasn't too bad... kinda akward... but after I replaced the switch I drove the car for a month and a half and had no further problems at all...

With my car it affected both windows... and the vent fan as well...

Sweet... glad I found this thread. I just started having the same problem, sometimes when I start it up, no a/c fan and no power windows. Turn it off and start it again, then all works fine. Guess I'll try the ignition switch.

Don't I have to crack into the steering column for that one? Oh well, doesn't matter too much.... I need to replace my ingition cylinder, too while I'm in there.

To replace the ignition switch under the dash you don't have to crack into the steering column. You only have to lower it down far enough to replace the switch since it sits on top of the column. Yes you will need to remove the steering wheel to replace the ignition lock cylinder.
