Ok, does the 86 require the IAT? and is it on the air box. I know the air intake unit has been replaced and just noticed that the sensor on the new lid is in it.

Are you looking for the Idle Air Control (IAC) or the Manifold Air Temp (MAT) sensor or as you call it the IAT. Yes you need the MAT and it is located in the underside of the plenum towards the rear. The schematic that I included was for the IAC, not the MAT. Here is the schematic for the MAT. There is a short wire harness from the MAT to a connector on the wire bundle at the firewall near the wiper motor that goes to the ECM.

Is this what you are talking about? If so, it is the Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor.

no that is not is it is a IAT sensor, I believe the air unit is off of a newer model, it appears to be the same as the one on my LT1 car. From what I have seen the 86 does not require it. so they just left it in there, it is actually a 1" sensor that goes into the air box to measure air going into the intake.

on a stock TPI car, the IAT is on the bottom of the plenum, near the distributor.

A lot of people relocate it to the airbox for cooler sensor readings.

A V6 car has the IAT in the iarbox.

Re: 86 Iroc TPI IAT sensor ?.

I have a88 Trans Am 305 TPI. I did an engines rebuild and started hooking up the connectors. The IAT - MAT connector looks like it connects to the coil there is an adjacent matching connector from the ECM to the coil. Is this correct? I can't find any connector near the firewall that matches.

Thanks
