Alternator
Alternator
My 89 camaro will not charge. The alternator has a red, brown, and white wire coming out of the plug. Can someone please explain to me exactly how to make sure these wires are where they are to be connected. The car has always had wiring problems and I have had 2 different shops wire it and it still does not charge. Putting a volt meter on the battery with the a.c. and lights on it stays a 12.2 no higher and does not fluctuate. If someone could tell me how to wire up the alt. correctly I would greatly appreciate it.

The red wire in that plug is a fusible link going to the starter solenoid. The brown/white wire goes to two places, the first is the coolant fan relay and the second is the FP-FAN fuse on the fuse panel. There should be a 4 ga. black/red wire going to a post on the back of the alternator from the positive post on the battery. Have you done any modifications to your coolant fan where it would not be stock?
I had a lot of trouble with the fan but I had it rewired and it is working off the key instead of a switch like before. How do I know if the fan relay is bad and how does the gauge in the dash get its reading to let you know if the car is charging. They grounded the fan relay i guess to get it to work. They jumped a ground wire to it. Is that suppose to be like that or do you have some suggestions.
thanks
