LED third brake light issues

I just finished making a 10 LED third brake light. I wired it exactly the same as stock, theres 2 hot wires coming from the tailight harness, those 2 wires go into a little black box that I cut from the original third brake light (I'm assuming this is a diode or something). Then out of that black box theres only 1 hot wire which I ran up to the positive side of the LED's. The negative side of the LED's is just run to ground. Problem is the LED's blink with the signals, they light up fine when the brakes are applied however. I'm wondering if the LED's have a different resistance than the old single incandesant bulb which is causing the diode not to work? Is there any other way around this if this is the case? I would assume a diode would work reguardless of what its connected too but maybe I'm wrong, any help is appreciated.
