Size of fusible links

Hey guys How do I tell what size fusible link I need to replace my old ones with? If it says 14 what does that mean? also at pepboys the fusible links that say 14 are alot smaller then the ones on my car. And can I use any type, like ford or somthing?? and One more question If I used and Inline fuse instead of the fusible links how would I know what size I needed? thanks guys

As a rule, fusible links are 4 sizes smaller than the wire they protect. If the fusible link says 14, it will go on a 10 guage wire. Hope this helps.

Are you sure the wire isnt the same size with a different amount of insulation? Any brand fuseable link will work because it is just a lenth of wire smaller than the wire it protects. You can even use regular wire in a pinch. See how difficult it would be to calculate the current draw of the circuit and then find the maximum current the wire could handle, you might as well just stick with the fuseable link.
