Fuel Gauge problems...

Well im startin to get tired of not knowin how much gas i have. I took off the top of the tank to check all the wires. Im also tryin to find the culprit of my fuel pump stopin when it wants to. then startin when it wants to. Anyway, back to the gauge. I found the wire that send the signal to the gauge. WHen i start the car or have it in the prime position it reads COMPLETLY full. When i put a test light on the wire it goes to half a tank. Which is about what i have in there from the looks of it. I thought it was bad ground ect... I held a wire on the signal wire then grounded the other side. Now my gauge reads empty. All the connections look ok. I followed the wire up to the kick panel and still the same thing on readings. I have no idea what else to try. Anybody?

You really need a multimeter to check the reading at the gas tank harness to see if the sender has any resistance (should be between 0-90 ohm depending on fuel level)
The gauge will peg full when a break in the circuit between it and ground is present and read empty when grounded w/zero resistance. The test light probably just gave a weak ground through the wire when you tested it causing the gauge to get a faint reading.

Check around with the local auto parts stores and price them out.
