How difficult is it to add power locks to a car without them?

My Camaro doesn't currently have power locks, how hard would it be to add this feature in? I found the original switches on eBay along with original lock solenoids. Can anyone tell me if this is even worth trying to do?

I plan on doing the conversion. It doesn't appear difficult. You will have to remove the seats, console and carpet to lay the wiring down. I think the wire routing will be the hardest part, especialy when routing them to the doors. I found the wiring, associated wiring parts and door motors in the junkyard. The switches will be bought new.

Would I really have to take all that out to run the wires? There's no other way to do it?

I don't see why you'd have to remove the seats and carpet although it would help. Just run them up above your feet, behind stereo, around to door, etc.

You're absolutely right guys. What I had in my mind was the wiring for the power windows. The wiring for those go under the seats, carpet, console, etc.

The door lock harness is, however, routed high up behind the dash on the cowl/firewall in one of those plastic wire gutters all along the length of the dash, by the looks of the pictures in my shop manual. I suppose you could lay the harness at the forward part of the floor at the base of the firewall.

I can scan those pictures if would help you.

Since my car doesn't have power locks or power windows, would I really need to run the wires the way they would have been done in the factory? The main reason I'm doing this is so that when I get my car alarm I can take advantage of the remote unlock and hatch release.

Yeah, route the harness the way you see fit. It wouldn't be too hard to make the harness. If you do go that route, I can scan the diagrams for you so you can wire it up to the door locks and switches.

Let me know.

That'd be great. The wiring diagram would make this much easier. Thanks.

You got it! Your profile page doesn't allow messages to be sent via email.

Send me your email and I'll get some diagrams out to you. It will have to be in about 1-1/2 hours. I'm leaving the house for awhile.
