Key will not turn back to Acc. position

Appearently the origional owner had an alarm on the car, and removed it before I bought it. I am guessing this is why the key will not turn back to access the accessory position. Though it is not a big deal, it would be nice to be able to play the stereo without it killing the battery in 10 minutes. Any help would be appreciated.

i had the same problem for as long as i've had my car, just recently my ignigtion switch died and the only way i can start my car is with the remote starter. But, I got a new ingniton cylinder with keys from pep-boys for 50 bucks. so i'm hoping that i will both be able to start my car with the key and turn it back to acc.

are your best et and trap with a 383, or was that the 5.0L??

it was with the 383, however without much tuning, the rpm airgap, or the spec stage 3 clutch. I am sure it was deep into the 12's by the end of it's life, and that was with a 2bbl holley tbi.

I have the same problem. It will not go back to the accessory position. the ignition cylinder will not even push it , its completely against the column. I had to replace the ignition switch and it still doesn't work, no ideas on why either.

Hold up... I have this problem as well but think I have at least isolated the problem:

Older TGO Thread

Here is the exact post that helped me out (maybe):

From badjuju342

hold the phone!!!!!! most likely it is NOT your key switch.there is a rod that runs down your column to the actual ignition switch on the lower 1/2 of the column . the key switch itself only operates this rod. the ignition is notorious for getting out of adjustment from vibration over the last 20 or some odd years. it very simple fix , a 10mm , 8mm and 7mm wrench is required to fix it . the switch is located at the top of the lower 1/2 of column . look for a white plastic piece with larger gauge red , yellow, pink , orange and brown wires coming out of it. loosen the nuts, bolts securing it but don't take them all the way off. notice the mounting holes are elongated so gently slide the switch back and forth until you get it into the acc position then snug it back up . proceed to check the run &start positions from there . cost to fix :0.00 ,getting your acc.position back : priceless.

Glad I could help.

Please let me know how hard it is. If the weather holds tomorrow, this is the project I am going to do. Got a digital camera?

I got Trickster to provide some pics (blow up diagram) of the steering column as a guide. The applicable diagrams are at the bottom of this thread:

Trickster strikes again!
