Hello jocww,

From looking at my schematic for your car, you should have four wires and three connectors. One big wire from the battery, two fusible links in one terminal lug, and a small purple wire going to the small terminal marked "S". The purple wire goes to the Park/neutral switch on the shifter if it's an automatic and the Clutch safety switch on the clutch pedal if it's a manual. Have you checked the charge on the battery in the car? If less than 10 volts it won't work, I have also seen batteries that show 12 volts on the meter that have "0" for amperage.

Have you checked to see if it might need some shims installed? also do you have the bat wire and two fusible links connected to the top post on the starter solenoid and that strap from the starter connected to the lower post on the solenoid. Have you also checked the voltage at the starter solenoid as someone trys to start it?

no i didnt think of shims as its the same flywheel same starter. the strap is connected to lower part of the starter. the 2 fusible links and the bat are tied to the top post. no i havent tried to check the voltage yet. is it true
ok put the DVOM on the 20 VDC scale
put the red lead onto the lil wire
and the black lead to ground
try to crank the engine with the key and see if the voltmeter shows 12vs
if it does then something is up with ur wiring going to the starter from the solenoid
if it doesnt then the problem is in the wiring coming from the ignition switch

Basically. when you do this and turn the key you will get a drop in battery voltage due to the load being put on it. If it goes below between 9 & 10 volts then you have a bad battery. Another way to check the draw on the battery is to put a meter across the battery terminals and check the voltage drop as the key is turned just like above. Then check to see how fast the voltage goes back to 12 volts. If it is slow to go back, replace the battery. To check for voltage from the ignition switch, take the purple wire from the small post and put the meter across it and a good ground and have someone turn the key as you check the voltage. If things are okay it should be 12 volts.

Did you check all your grounds on the back of both cylinder heads?

The car won't start with just the starter alone, it would need for the distributor, plugs, coil, & ignition module be connected as well.
