ECM Compatability

I have an 82 carbed Trans Am and I know the 82 year had a one year ECM. My question is though, if I can use the ECM off any other year car?...like say an carbed 84 and if I can use a Camaro or Firebird module as well. Thanks

I also have a carbed '82 (until my TPI engine is ready that is!), and unless anyone knows different I'd say that an '84 ECM would probably work, except I'm not sure whether '84 cars had a knock sensor or not. Aside from this I think the ECMs in 82 and 84 controlled the same things.

One thing that would have been different is that an '84 car would have a 700-R4 instead of the 200C. I wonder if having the overdrive gear required the ECM to be programmed slightly different when it came to locking up the torque converter...
