Speedo goes haywire; service light on

Hello Lads:

My speedometer is not working. most of the time it doesn't register and some of the time it makes feeble attempts to register. the service light started going on at about the same time and it comes on intermittently.

any ideas?

thanks

Check the wires at the VSS sender at the transmission first. Make sure the connector is not corroded. If not, then either the gear for the VSS cracked or the sender is bad. Without the VSS signal the speedo will not work and the SES light will come on because the VSS signal controls trans lock and EGR.
